Traditional cancer treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy was found ineffective in some patients. Majority of these solid tumors are dead tissues of low oxygen regions. This encourages the growth of clostridium bacteria which is an agent used to deliver anti cancer treatments. Studies showed that genetically engineered clostrida had been successful in treating tumors in animals. Their spores can germinate and thrive in dead areas inside tumors. This is an important find in the fight against cancer because they become more effective and active in oxygen starved areas of tumors which are the areas most difficult to reach by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This will be used to increase effectiveness of conventional cancer treatments. However there are notorious clotridia that causes serious illnesses like tetanus and botulism. The research next step is to evaluate clinical trial with human patients.
